Ok, so it has been a long time coming but at our last
meeting we played our first game of LOTOW using figures and terrain supplied by
one of our members. There were six of us playing so we started by creating two ad hoc posses of 9 figures and
controlled 3 figures each. As this was
our first game we didn't want it to
become too cumbersome. All we wanted to
do was to try the rules out and see how the mechanisms worked.

In order to simplify things we chose the same stats for each side so we didn't have too much to remember on our first attempt but that didn't detract from the game in any way.

So, one side was the upstanding citizens of our own town
with no name and the other was a group of unwelcome rowdy types meandering into town. The game began with the rowdies entering town
and the residents attempting to stop them by force, as was always going to be
the case. A few citizens were placed, including an undertaker, a few drunks who got in the way and some floozies lurking with intent.

A gunfight ensued with a number of the characters firing,
and missing on several occasions. Great
fun was had and there was plenty of mirth and dubious comments about the 'Pluck
Test' and the 'In the way chart' which did create a few situations. Anyway some figures hid behind door posts and
bits of fence as well as other citizens.

A good game using, what appears to be, a very well thought
out set of rules with the result that we will be playing it again, hopefully
fairly soon. We like games to have a particular flavour and this one seemed to have it, with figures lurking in buildings and behind cover.

The game ended in a sort of stale mate but we decided that there would be a return match. if you haven't yet tried this game give it a go as we are sure you will enjoy it as much as we did and despite the fact that this set is published by Warhammer Historical there is not a saving throw in sight nor do you need bucket loads of dice.
Simonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01350893938778685169noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1914908899573436132.post-60200332256214529432011-12-14T11:05:00.000+00:002011-12-14T11:06:46.744+00:00Club Christmas game 2011It has come round far too quickly but I again volunteered to run the club Christmas game last night.

A couple of months ago whilst perusing the web i came across a set of rules for a canoe race game colonial-canoe-race and added a little extra by way of seasonal chocolate coins.

At the start each player took charge of a canoe and four coins which could be used, once per turn, at any point to add 1XD6 movement, which allowed them, most of the time, to cross the rapids safely. However this was not always the case.

A fun couple of games were had during the evening, along with a couple of beers. The rules worked nicely and were easily understood by all parties. All the coins 'spent' on additional movement dice were then added to the pile of coins which would eventually go to the winner

I'll now post a couple of pictures of the games.

The major difference from standard Black Powder is that the three elements the pike and the two sleeves of shot are able to operate as individual units to achieve common goals, So the sleeves may elect individual targets, and the movement of all three is as required to achieve a new configuration. The individual elements also are treated separately for combat but as a unit for morale purposes.

Command dice

Exceed command on 2D6 and movement is restricted to 50% of standard move
A roll equal to or one below the command entitles the unit(s) to move 100% of standard move

A roll of 2 or more under the command entitles the unit to(s) to move 150% of standard move

Once within 12 “ of enemy all moves are subject to initiative no die rolls and all moves are 100% of standard

No interpenetration is allowed through a pike block, units will flow around a pike block. If that is impossible the unit will become disordered and will make its way to the rear of the pike block in a state of disarray, and will need to be rallied by a brigade commander
Biocca specifics

The earthworks represent a major obstacle and the attacking troops when they reach the sunken road and the earthworks must roll a D10 to see if they can succeed in crossing both obstacles.

On a roll of a D10 on a roll of 1 or 2 the assailants will have breached the obstacle and will be at the top of the earthworks

If not they are to remain at the base of the sunken road

Whilst at the base of the earthworks the artillery may fire at them at point blank range as the earthworks were configured to allow the sunken road to be enfiladedSimonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01350893938778685169noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1914908899573436132.post-70103144287441454402011-05-16T09:41:00.001+01:002011-05-16T09:43:20.720+01:00Black Powder for Glorious RevolutionAs a club we are quite taken with the Black Powder rules published by Warlord Games and have been tinkering with them for Pike and Shot. Below are the stats we use for the Glorious Revolution, or Nine Years War period, specifically for the wars in Ireland

BASIC RESTRICTIONS

No double or triple movement within 12” (engagement range) of formed infantry

All units get first fire advantage, Platoon firers get the chance to re roll one failed firing die per turn

For a failed command roll raw units may not move at all, , any other units will move 2” for a failed command roll

No voluntary interpenetration is allowed, troops may only flow round friends if there is a gap at least a base width. Any other interpenetration will cause disorder to both units.

Orders may be given to brigades or individual units. Should a unit be asked to include any other movement than moving forward it must be given an individual order.

Any order requiring a unit to wheel, retrograde or incline must be separate, thus a unit with three orders may move forward for one, wheel for one then move forward once more. Thus each manoeuvre will require a separate order.
Examples for the Jacobite wars in ireland:

Elite British units would include Senior infantry regiments such as Kirke’s Lambs, Dumbartons (Royal Scots), Footguards and Cavalry Lifeguard.

Guard status would be reserved for the Dutch Gard de Voet and Danish garden til Fods.

The majority of Jacobite regiments in Ireland would be Raw with some of the more senior regiments, such as The Grand Priors Regiment would be Line. Thus for each three raw units one may be line or better.Simonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01350893938778685169noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1914908899573436132.post-75728966147885229762011-05-16T08:42:00.002+01:002011-05-16T08:42:37.242+01:00Simonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01350893938778685169noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1914908899573436132.post-20381487311970331052011-03-18T14:57:00.000+00:002011-03-18T14:57:34.725+00:00Black PowderLong time no posts, but here is an update.

Recently we have been playing the Black powder rules, published by Warlord Games, for our Napoleonic and ACW games. We have also been looking at using the mechanisms for ECW and Glorious Revolution periods, both Pike and Shot but both different in their own ways.

We have played a couple of ECW games so far with some modifications to the rules and hoping to give the Glorious Revolution a bash using still further modifications.

The rules themselves are robust enough to withstand quite a lot of tinkering and for the Glorious Revolution the alternative unit stats come in useful, such as Untried, Untested and Newly Raised for the Raw units.
The game was set during William of Orange's war against King James in Ireland.

The game involved William's forces attampting to break through the Jacobite defences but fortune seemed to be with the jacobites on the day as the first roll to determine the commander quality left William's force with a Plodder as a commander and the Jacobites with a Good commander.

This seemed to set the tone of the battle as, eventually, the jacobites managed to stop William's force achieving their goal.

What follows is a series of photos taken through the game.

<img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; A 1500 point English Hundred Years War army against a similar strength French one.

The English army was primarily Bow and Knights/Billmen with a small reserve of Knights and Sergeants. The French were heavy on Knights and cavalry with crossbows and cannon in support.

The variant of the rules allowing battles to move in ‘brigade’ style regardless of the number in the unit allowed the English to move on to a hill and take up a position with stakes to their front. The French advanced very slowly towards it with an emphasis on their left where the English had left a gap.

Seeing the threat to their right the English angled back to receive what appeared to be a looming charge. A failed command roll prevented a weak line of archers from putting down stakes and the inevitable French charge caused several casualties.

The small English reserve of Sergeants however were in a position to plug the gap and realising this the French withdrew before being counter charged. With only two turns remaining the English attempted to make good the imbalance in casualties with a charge of their own which sadly did not cause any real damage to the French.

The rules worked well with the subtle changes on battles and smaller fall backs from shooting giving a period feel to the game. The English needed to be defensive but this prevented any use of initiative. The rules are set at a large skirmish type scale with a couple of platoons of infantry per side with support units in the form of armoured vehicles and heavy weapons.

The Germans were defending a village with river crossing and had a platoon of infantry supported by a mortar section and an mg section, two Pz IV, an 88mm A/T gun, and a 37mm A/T gun.

The Allies (American Rangers) had three shermans, a 17pdr A/T gun, two platoons of infantry with an mg section in support.

As the game was an attack on an unknown defence the Germans started the game hidden from view and the Allies cautiosly approached the bridge from the road and the German right flank across country but things soon started to hot up when the Germans opened fire with their mortars and brought their tanks into play but had to wait until the Shermans got a little closer before knocking on out and immobilizing another leaving one lone tank to close the distance before it could do any damage to the panzers.

The german mortars open up on the unsuspecting Allied advance

The Germans bring their tanks into play to counter the advance on the Allied left of the Shermans supporting one of the Ranger platoons

The 88mm was spotted and opened up on a rogue truck approaching the bridge causing a road block there and soon the Americans were hard pressed to take the bridge and pinned down in the German crossfire.

In the centre the truck makes a suicidal rush towards the bridge but is unaware of the 88mm waiting just down the road to welcome it

However, in the meantime, the left flank Ranger squad got pinned down in a patch of rough ground and was supported by some fairly accurate mortar and HE rounds from the shermans onto the infantry on the German right flank.

The Allied right began to crumble as one squad was pinned down not far from some houses occupied by German infantry and soon were whittled down to a couple of men and forced to withdraw but not before their support had pinned the infantry in the houses and an accurately fired mortar round caused serious damage on the occupants of the houses who also had to withdraw but a support section soon re occupied the ground and fired on the Americans advancing over the bridge.

With one of the Shermans brewing up and a second just moments away from being immobilised, the Allied forces are forced to make a tactical withdrawal

Eventually the Americans reached the point of no return and were forced to make a fighting withdrawal but not before giving the Germans a bloody nose.

All in all the game worked reasonably well and all players seemed to enjoy having my rules thrust upon them. The game lasted about 21/2-3 hours which was just right for a club night so I think, with a little tweaking, the rules seem to work but I think a little more playtesting is required after a few tweaks here and there.

The photo above shows a squad of Allied infantry attacking the row of houses on the German's left flank but becoming pinned down under fire from the troops located in the houses. The Germans were able to use hidden deployment and position their forces anywhere up to the river line from the right hand table edge. The ground was strewn with hedgerows and rough ground to restrict line of sight and provide some cover for the troops on the ground.Simonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01350893938778685169noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1914908899573436132.post-47083372802336552982009-01-12T09:09:00.000+00:002009-01-12T09:10:55.835+00:00Newspaper cutting from the Christmas game<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 216px; height: 320px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_qISNLs-i__g/SWsI_iNeW4I/AAAAAAAAATs/8Y33nHRj1Jc/s320/newspaper.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5290332074884881282" />Simonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01350893938778685169noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1914908899573436132.post-38090968143357766242009-01-05T09:15:00.001+00:002009-01-05T09:57:36.493+00:00Christmas game 2008-the rulesBRITISH

You are to get to the zariba where your brother officers will welcome you back having collected the Colonel’s Christmas tree. Along your route back you understand there is a stash of gold coins which you must collect as you go. You will make this your present to the Colonel should you get back safely.

Your cavalry and artillery are still at the mission and protected by a zariba.

Can you get the Christmas tree back to safety?

Reaching the zariba

To count as a success, the British need to have at least 25% of their initial forces, or one section at 75% or more of its original strength, within the compound by the end of turn 12.

The British force in this game consists of: 5 sections infantry and one squadron of cavalry with one maxim gun. Three of the sections include an NCO which will represent the player commanding that section. Officers will represent the other players on the table and may command sections, with one being given overall command of the column. The men and NCOs are all armed with the standard Martini- Henry single shot, breech-loading rifle and socket bayonet.

The officers have Webley service revolvers and swords. They are currently somewhat short of ammunition, having been told that further supplies are located at the mission. Each section, commanded by a player, must dice to see how much ammunition they have over 6 rounds, counting the dice score as the number of extra rounds available. Officers are deemed to have pistols and have a full chamber at the start and enough ammunition for one reload (ie. 12 rounds worth of ammunition)

MOVEMENT

British infantry skirmishing
(bases at least one base width apart) 4” + d6”
British infantry formed
(bases touching) 4” + d3”
British infantry formed at the double
(may not double or charge in consecutive
moves; may not double whilst skirmishing) 6” + d3”
British infantry charging into contact
(may not charge or double in consecutive moves) 8” + d3”
British infantry on hill, difficult terrain or in square Half speed + d3”.
Cavalry move normally at 9”+d6
Cavalry charging 12”+d6
Any troops jumping linear obstacle -3” and roll 1D6 per figure
1=fallen, can’t shoot, -2 in melee

Troops Movement

SHOOTING

Martini-Henry/ maxim gun Short 0-6” Medium 6-12” Long 12-18”
Webley revolver Short 0-2” Medium 2-6”

The British can either volley fire, or fire at will as individuals.
To volley fire, all figures must be in direct base-to-base contact and all must shoot at the same target and will mark off TWO rounds of ammunition for each turn of volley fore.

The officer/NCO commanding each section will decide which type of fire to use if the sections are separated by more than 3”; if sections are kept together, then the senior officer/NCO present will decide for the whole body firing.

Roll a d6 for each man firing:

Short range 3, 4, 5, 6 kills
Medium range 4, 5, 6 kills
Long range 5 or 6 kills
(Maxim gun roll as for 4 figures) a die roll of 1 will indicate a jam and will require one full turn to clear.

Modifiers:
Units firing volleys +1 (see above)
Target in cover -2
Dervish rifles -1

Target began charge two shots permitted,
at long range delivered at medium range

Target began charge one shot only permitted,
at medium range delivered at close range

Target began charge no shooting permitted
at close range

MELEE

Mêlées take place immediately when opposing figures come into base-to-base contact. The emphasis was on simplicity, so that four people could pick up the rules and play a game or two within a 1½ hour session.

Good games!

There was an ACW game for two sides using a familiar rule type for the period. The idea being to hold and take terrain features for points. The team with the most won. First and second places being determined by the person who inflicted most casualties on the enemy. It took a while to realise that the key to the game was to take ground, regardless of casualties, to ensure being first or second. I realised it too late!

The second game was all the players against the umpire (The Umpire Strikes Back?). The Umpire had a bunch of elephants to hurl across the field against a phalanx. The phalanx did no fighting but were targets for the elephants, each player being responsible for defending ¼ of the phalanx. To this end the players had four skirmish units to shoot the elephants to try to kill them or, at the least, to herd them into some else's part of the table. There was also skulduggery possible by trapping another player's skirmisher against an advancing elephant, leaving him nowhere to go.

The third game was a game for four separate player's. Fuzzy wuzzies attacking a square. Each player controlling a bunch of attackers as well as a side of the square. Points awarded for casualties or breaking the square. If you attacked your own side of the square you inflicted points on yourself whichever way the fight went! An initiative based game, hard to build a strategy as the player with initiative was able to move or rotate the square. Fun game.

The last game was a double blind game, where only the umpire knew where all the player's were. North American Indians spying out the opposition's camp (French Indian wars). A very good game with the umpire able to keep both sides, divided by a screen, sufficiently in the dark as to the action of the opposition. Two teams of two (the winer decided on points) had to sneak their Indian scouts across the table, observe the enemy camp for as long as possible, and then sneak back. The Enemy trying the same thing in the opposite direction. If you saw the enemy you were allowed to shoot arrows at him!

The Thames Valley team were able to hold first place for the first two sessions, but then took a disastrous dive during the third. Still we managed to fight back a bit in the fourth session to finish second overall.

I hope that I can go to this event again. A suggestion from the hosts was that each team bring a game with an umpire, sound good to me. Another suggestion was that maybe we could host a similar event in late Spring/early Summer.Simonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01350893938778685169noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1914908899573436132.post-69262739992712701662008-12-10T08:34:00.007+00:002008-12-12T08:23:24.691+00:00Afghanistan game in 6mmA game was played using the modern variant of Blitzkreig Commander in 6mm, set in modern Afghanistan.
Having played Blitzkrieg commander a couple of weeks ago Chris, Alan and Pete agreed to a try out the modern version, Cold War Commander, umpired by Steve.

The scenario was a modern Middle East one with a Battalion of US marines supported by air, artillery and a tank on a search and destroy mission. Alan and Pete took a command each. Chris played the insurgent side with hidden deployment to add a bit of an edge to the US players.

The game started with Pete clearing the first of a number of built up areas whilst Alan moved forward through open ground on the left to a tree line and a BUA beyond. Pete learnt the first of a few little tricks in the rules and hit a booby trap. Whilst his platoon survived he decided to move a little more carefully in future!

Alan meanwhile moved quickly taking a little sniper fire but getting his three stands into the tree line ready to move on to the BUA ahead. Without waiting for Pete to catch up on the left Alan advanced on the BUA and immediately prompted Chris to declare the first two of his hidden units. Catching the marines in the open with opportunity fire two stands were suppressed. Alan applied the excellent maxim of ‘if in doubt charge’! Sadly marines crossing open ground to assault superior numbers well dug in to buildings was doomed to failure and his stand was lost.

Alan pulled back to the tree line and engaged in a protracted fire fight with the well dug in insurgents. Artillery and an air strike failed to dislodge them. Pete had meanwhile cleared the first BUA and moving in to the second bumped more of Chris’ forces. The fire fight was inconclusive for a little until Pete and Alan between them managed to coordinate fire and kill some of Chris forces. Putting the heavily armoured and pretty impregnable M1 on a flank posed too much of a threat and Chris’ second trick of the evening was for his forces facing Pete to pull back out of sight and ‘hide’.

Having cleared the second BUA and with armour support the Marines were able to form a good firing line ready to assault the two final BUA. Chris now threw caution to the wind and declared all his remaining forces in them. A fire fight began but Pete and Alan pressed their advantage of air power, artillery and armour to slowly wear Chris insurgents down. With one stand off his break point and no hope of turning the tide Chris declared a win for the USMC. Overall a good game. CWC has simple mechanisms and plays fast with subtleties that give real complexity and uncertainty. Time to start painting up those T72 to give the marines a bit of heavy opposition!

Simonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01350893938778685169noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1914908899573436132.post-45560212838896182422008-12-10T08:20:00.009+00:002008-12-10T08:33:57.878+00:00Another Napoleonic gameWe had another game using the General de Brigade rules but this time based on one of the scenarios from the book. Unfortunately lady luck did not smile on William’s troops as their cavalry broke and fled leaving the left flank open to the remaining Jacobite cavalry which charged against two of the three regiments causing one to break and flee, the other became disordered having failed to form square before the cavalry reached them.

However the Nassau regiment, although disordered faired somewhat better, although disordered, by the Jacobite commander throwing bad dice and inflicting no further casualties.
